Session Name: Achieving speed with global mindfulness
Going faster becomes easier every day thanks to a growing number of software abstractions, thousands of packages of off-the-shelf code available with one command, and the endless capacity of cloud resources. But with great power comes great responsibility. We have optimized for speed and scale in the past, while losing awareness of the potential side effects of our decisions in the environment and in our society. In this talk, we will look at the trend towards optimizing for speed, some of the potential side effects of speed without mindfulness of its global impact, and we will look to identify ways to go faster, without risking our environment, the security of our users, and the stability of our society.
